I keep government-scale systems running and make it look boring.

I'm Raj — a senior developer at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. I build the infrastructure, deploy the Government of Canada websites and 100+ applications that run on it, and secure all of it to government standards — across Azure, AWS, and real on-prem systems. The best deploys are the ones nobody notices.

What I work on

Things I love building.

A few places where I tend to do my best work — across Azure-hosted, on-prem, and the messy hybrid in between.

Cloud platforms & CI/CD

Azure & AWS infrastructure-as-code, App Services, and identity — paired with Azure DevOps pipelines and Git workflows that turn Friday-night deploys into a non-event.

.NET backends & REST APIs

C# / ASP.NET services connecting enterprise datasets, internal platforms, and third-party systems through clean, well-documented integrations.

Networking & connectivity

Routing & switching, OSPF and BGP, VLANs and MPLS, wireless, and secure hybrid links — VPNs, private endpoints, and firewalls that connect on-prem to cloud cleanly.

Security, databases & reliability

SSO, vulnerability scanning, patch & firewall hygiene. Query tuning across MySQL, Oracle, and SQLite. Backup & DR plans you can actually rehearse.

After hours

Things I tinker with.

Small personal builds I keep around — a way of staying curious about protocols, fundamentals, and how systems hang together end-to-end.

AI Private Knowledge Assistant

A self-hosted assistant that turns scattered company documents, wikis, and runbooks into answers. A Python pipeline scrapes and chunks the corpus, embeds it into a pgvector store on PostgreSQL, and serves grounded responses through a local Ollama model — entirely on-prem, nothing leaves the network.

V’s Delights — Artisan Chocolate

A production website built end-to-end for a small business selling handmade chocolate. Drupal 11 with a fully custom theme — featured collection, story, ingredients, customer reviews, gallery, and WhatsApp enquiries — running on a self-managed DigitalOcean droplet that I provision, secure, and operate myself: Nginx, HTTPS, updates, and backups included.

IT Home Security Platform

A small but real distributed system at home. A mesh of ESP-based sensors — motion, door, window, water, CO, and smoke — reports to a Raspberry Pi hub feeding a REST API, database, and Node.js dashboard. Mobile alerts run over a private VPN with segmented network flows and cloud backup.

Enterprise Network Simulation

A full simulation of a real-world company network, built on physical Cisco equipment. End-to-end: edge routing with BGP, OSPF in the core, MPLS transport, VLANs and STP at distribution and access layers, NAT, secure Wi-Fi, site-to-site VPN, and firewalls — designed, wired, and troubleshot by hand.

Bluetooth Low Energy Scanner

An Android app that discovers nearby BLE devices — written to learn the protocol end-to-end. It scans advertising packets, parses service UUIDs and manufacturer data, and surfaces each device with live signal strength, letting you inspect GATT services in real time.

On the side

I also teach.

One-on-one sessions for students and career-changers. We focus on building real intuition — the kind that sticks long after the syntax fades.

The way I wish I'd learned to code.

Patient, project-based, and honest about what's hard. We start wherever you are — fundamentals, debugging habits, the mental models nobody quite spells out — and build toward something you'll be proud to show people.

Senior Developer

Canadian Food Inspection Agency · Ottawa, ON
  • Design and maintain automated multi-stage CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps — ARM templates, approval gates, artifact management — for secure, repeatable delivery across cloud and on-prem.
  • Provision Azure infrastructure as code: virtual networks, NSGs, private endpoints, web app services, and databases across dev, QA, and production.
  • Containerize the Drupal web CMS with Docker and Azure Container Registry; evaluated Kubernetes on SSC's AWS platform for orchestrating on-prem CFIA apps.
  • Operate Azure Monitor, Defender for Cloud, Network Watcher, and Log Analytics (KQL) for health monitoring, security posture, and incident response.
  • Manage inspection.canada.ca and merlin — 30,000+ pages and 52+ on-prem apps — including MySQL, Oracle, and SQLite deployments, backups, tuning, and security.
  • Mentor junior developers and co-op students — code reviews, pairing on DevOps and Azure practices, guiding them from first commit to production.

Acting Senior Analyst

Canadian Food Inspection Agency · Ottawa, ON
  • Provided technical leadership and mentorship on CI/CD operations, secure DevOps practices, Azure services, and ServiceNow incident management.
  • Migrated legacy scripts and on-prem applications to containerized Azure pipeline deployments, improving consistency and cutting manual effort.
  • Automated workflows with Python and PowerShell, and built tooling to surface security vulnerabilities and performance issues across web platforms.
May 2023 — Jan 2024

Developer

Canadian Food Inspection Agency · Ottawa, ON
  • Led and mentored a student team modernizing the PASO Fertilizer web application (C#, JavaScript, SQL) — delivered on time and earned a 2024 Dare to Try award.
  • Designed Azure DevOps pipelines for the full project lifecycle, establishing a reusable delivery framework for later CFIA modernization work.
  • Resolved service tickets through ServiceNow under ITIL incident management, collaborating with Security, Cloud, Networking, Database, and SSC teams.
Sep 2022 — Dec 2022

Software Developer Intern

ForestSAT · Remote
  • Built data collection pipelines feeding an AI image-scanning algorithm for early wildfire detection from satellite and aerial imagery.
  • Wrote tooling to standardize, label, and validate large image datasets used to train the model.
  • Collaborated with the ML team to iterate on data quality issues surfaced during training and evaluation.
Sep 2021 — Mar 2022

Assistant Team Leader & Software Developer

GAO Tek · Toronto, ON
  • Collaborated with budgeting, design, and web teams to launch a new application — design, documentation, and customer rollout.
  • Acted as technical advisor: assigned tasks by expertise, supported debugging, and guided non-IT team members through application development.
  • Bridged developers and non-technical stakeholders, keeping deliverables aligned across the project lifecycle.

A little more

A bit about me.

I live in Ottawa and spend most of my days inside enterprise codebases and cloud pipelines — mostly C#/.NET on Azure and AWS, alongside real on-prem systems. At the Canadian Food Inspection Agency I take things end-to-end: building the infrastructure, deploying Government of Canada websites like inspection.canada.ca and 100+ applications onto it, and securing all of it to government standards.

What I genuinely enjoy is making complex systems feel calm. Good observability. Deploys that aren't dramatic. Contracts between services that are easy to reason about. Security that isn't bolted on at the end.

Outside of work I tutor a few students, tinker with Android apps and home networking, and walk far too much for someone who claims they don't have time to exercise.
